The Two Hottest teams in USL face off at AutoZone Park: 901 FC vs Saint Louis FC

By : Caleb Hilliard

Few USL Championship teams have been as hot as Memphis over the past month.

Memphis 901 FC is in the best form of the season. They could and should make it four straight wins Saturday at home against Saint Louis FC.

Tim Mulqueen and Co. realize overcoming an 11 point deficit to make playoffs is near impossible but they are not backing down with four matches in hand.

What to watch for: Saint Louis FC

Saint Louis is also experiencing their best form of the season.

After midweek 2-0 win versus league leaders, New York Red Bulls II SLFC extended their win-streak to five matches.

Their last loss came on August 24 to Ottawa Fury FC.

After the Ottawa loss, SLFC snapped a five-match streak without a win with a 3-2 home victory over Hartford Athletic.

They continued to improve with consecutive home wins against Ottawa and Nashville SC, over a three-day span.

In their two most recent matches Saint Louis won at Birmingham Legion and at home against NYRB II.

Head coach Anthony Pulis favors a 4-4-2 formation, with Russel Cicerone as the left-midfielder and Kadeem Dacres as the right-midfielder.

Much of the play comes from the two wide midfielders.

Cicerone and Dacres have combined for nine goals and three assists over 27 matches.

Striker Kyle Greig is tied for a team-high seven goals, but fellow striker Tyler Blackwood is the man in form.

Blackwood has four of his five total goals in the last four matches.

The forward is technically gifted and can finish from tight angles.

What to Watch for: Memphis 901 FC

After starting the season 0-11-2 when conceding first in a match, 901 FC has come back to win after allowing the first goal in each of its last three matches.

Mulqueen has seemingly found the formation that best utilizes the 901 FC’s strengths, 4-2-3-1.

Cameron Lindley and Dan Metzger continue to create a great partnership as the two holding midfielders.

Adem Najem is beginning to find his role as the true #10.

Elliot Collier looks like he has recovered from his injury and has been phenomenal in the last two wins.

Marcus Epps is proving to be one of the 901 FC’s best threats on the break and Brandon Allen is benefiting from the play of Epps.

Allen has three goals in the last two matches and does not look like slowing down with four matches to go.

He is obviously a goal-scoring threat, but he also helps his team by coming deep into the midfield and linking up play.

On the defensive side, Marc Burch returns for this match after he picked up a one match suspension due to yellow card accumulation.
